ARTIFACT #0002 (p(r)ay for me) (2023)

My mother was always decorating—hanging craftwork, moving furniture, organizing baskets of vegetables from her garden—Costco decor made our house look like a home. She made an uncomfortable space cozy.

One of her particular favorite modes of interior design were typographic wall pieces. Those little signs hung throughout the kitchen, living room, and dining room, always with some mention of food, family, or faith. They were like passive prayers. Floating voiceless words meant to impart wisdom or blessing, yet could be easily ignored with a slight aversion of your gaze. Regardless of noticeability, they externalized a visual hope into the home.

I am not a religious individual, but these “passive prayers” served as a reminder for me to activate hope. Investment and belief hold mutual importance in the achievement of any ambition. A god doesn’t pray. They create.
